What Limestone Screenings is

Fine crushed limestone, from dust to ¼-inch chips. Screenings can compact into a firm path surface when the base and drainage are prepared for the site. They are not drainage stone or a universal paver bedding material.

Also called: limestone screenings, stone dust, limestone fines, quarry screenings.

What it’s used for

  • Compacted garden and walking paths
  • Landscape leveling where specified
  • Fine aggregate surfacing where specified
Not a fit for Drainage layers, or a substitute for a specified structural base. For concrete paver bedding, follow the manufacturer’s specification; ordinary screenings and stone dust are not the recommended default.

How much limestone screenings do I need?

Work in cubic yards: length × width × depth in feet, divided by 27. Limestone Screenings runs about 1.50 tons per cubic yard, and our quad-axle trucks haul 35 tons a load. This table gives the coverage for a single cubic yard at common depths.

Depth1 cubic yard coversPer 100 sq ft
2" 162 sq ft 0.6 yd³ · 0.9 tons
3" 108 sq ft 0.9 yd³ · 1.4 tons
4" 81 sq ft 1.2 yd³ · 1.9 tons
6" 54 sq ft 1.9 yd³ · 2.8 tons
12" 27 sq ft 3.7 yd³ · 5.6 tons

Add 10–15% for compaction and waste before you order. The driveway gravel calculator will do the whole thing for you, including how many trucks it takes, and the full materials calculator can size an order from a total quantity instead of dimensions.

Common Questions

Limestone Screenings, answered.

What are limestone screenings used for?
Screenings can make a compacted walking or garden path surface where site preparation and drainage are suitable. For walls, paving, pipes, or structural layers, use the material required by the project specification.
Are screenings the same as paver sand?
No. Screenings are fine crushed rock with dust. CMHA recommends suitable concrete bedding sand for conventional interlocking concrete pavers and advises against ordinary screenings, stone dust, and mason sand in that layer. Follow your paver manufacturer’s installation detail.
Can screenings be used for drainage?
Screenings contain fines that fill the spaces between particles. Use the clean drainage aggregate required by the design, such as an appropriate #57 stone, where water needs to pass through the layer.
