Stone Dust vs. Limestone Screenings: What to Order

Stone dust and limestone screenings can describe the same pile at a materials yard. They do not guarantee the same stone type, particle size, or amount of fines. Before ordering either, match the material to the layer you are building.

What changes between the two names?

Limestone screenings identifies the parent rock: limestone. At J1S, the listed material is ¼-inch minus, meaning a mix of small chips and finer particles down to dust. “Minus” describes what passes below a top size; it does not mean every particle is ¼ inch.

Stone dust is a broader yard term. A supplier might use it for limestone fines, granite fines, or another crushed-rock product. Some stockpiles include small chips; others are much finer. Asking for stone dust without discussing its use can get you a material that looks right in a photograph but behaves differently after rain or compaction.

If two quotes use different names, ask whether they come from the same source and have the same gradation. A gradation describes the distribution of particle sizes. For work governed by a plan, ask for the supplier’s specification or sieve analysis rather than deciding from the name alone.

For a walking path, think about the water first

Fine crushed limestone can make a firm walking surface when the site is prepared, shaped, and compacted for that purpose. The fines help fill the spaces between particles. The same tight structure makes it a poor substitute for drainage aggregate.

Before picking between screenings and another path surface, look at where roof runoff, uphill runoff, and water from the surrounding lawn will go. A path that sits in a low strip may stay wet regardless of how neatly the material was spread. Edging can hold the surface in place, but it also needs to work with the drainage route.

For concrete pavers, check the bedding specification

The bedding layer is the thin layer immediately beneath the pavers. It is different from the deeper structural base. CMHA’s interlocking concrete pavement specification excludes stone dust and mason sand as bedding and sets grading requirements for bedding sand. A bag or stockpile labeled “paver base” is not enough to confirm that it belongs directly under the pavers.

Give the supplier your paver manufacturer’s installation instructions. Ask for the base material and bedding material as separate items. Permeable paving has a different aggregate system, so do not carry a conventional patio detail over to it without checking the design.

That distinction matters even on a small patio. A cheap material substitution can affect the entire finished surface, while saving only a small part of the total project cost. Get the material approved before scheduling the delivery.

Are washed screenings the same thing?

No. Washing changes the amount of fine material in the product. You cannot assume washed and unwashed stockpiles will compact or move water the same way. Nor does washing automatically turn a screening product into approved bedding sand.

Ask what specification the washed material meets. If the answer is only “it is cleaner,” you still need to establish whether it suits the project. For a drain, start with the drain design and a specified clean aggregate such as #57 limestone, rather than trying to adapt a fine path material.

What to send when requesting delivery

  • The use: path surface, structural base, paver bedding, or another specified layer.
  • The dimensions: length, width, and intended depth of that layer.
  • The material detail: a product name and specification, if your installer has provided one.
  • The address and access: where the truck can enter and where the material can be unloaded.
