What Boulders is

Natural limestone boulders, individually placed by hand or machine depending on size. No two are the same — the irregular shape and weathered surface are the point. Ranges from manageable accent stones around 50 lbs to statement pieces that need a machine to position.

Also called: boulders, landscape boulders, limestone boulders, armour stone.

What it’s used for

  • Landscape accent stones & focal points
  • Natural retaining walls & slope stabilization
  • Dry stream beds & water feature edging
  • Property edge markers & driveway borders
Not a fit for Any application that requires material to be spread — boulders are placed individually. Specify approximate size range when ordering so we pull the right stock.

How much boulders do I need?

Work in cubic yards: length × width × depth in feet, divided by 27. Boulders runs about 1.75 tons per cubic yard, and our quad-axle trucks haul 35 tons a load. This table gives the coverage for a single cubic yard at common depths.

Depth1 cubic yard coversPer 100 sq ft
2" 162 sq ft 0.6 yd³ · 1.1 tons
3" 108 sq ft 0.9 yd³ · 1.6 tons
4" 81 sq ft 1.2 yd³ · 2.2 tons
6" 54 sq ft 1.9 yd³ · 3.2 tons
12" 27 sq ft 3.7 yd³ · 6.5 tons

Add 10–15% for compaction and waste before you order. The driveway gravel calculator will do the whole thing for you, including how many trucks it takes, and the full materials calculator can size an order from a total quantity instead of dimensions.

Common Questions

Boulders, answered.

How do I order boulders by size?
Tell us roughly what you want each stone to weigh or how big it should look in place — one-man, two-man, or machine-set. We pull from stock to match. Because no two are identical, boulders are quoted per piece or per ton rather than by the cubic yard.
Can you set the boulders, not just drop them?
Yes. Anything over a couple hundred pounds needs a machine to place well, and we have the equipment on site anyway for most jobs. Placement matters more than people expect — a boulder set with a third of its mass buried reads as natural, one sitting on the surface reads as delivered.
Do boulders work as a retaining wall?
For low walls, yes, and they look far better than block. The stone has to be sized to the height, seated into the slope rather than stacked on it, and drained behind. Above about three feet you are into engineered territory — call us and we will walk the site before you commit.
