River Rock delivered.

Water-worn stone in mixed 1–3" sizes, delivered by the load. River rock is what you use where the drainage has to look like it belongs there — dry creek beds, swales, downspout splash areas — and it holds position under flow better than anything lighter.

1"–3" mixed, smooth and rounded
Weight
~1.35 tons per cubic yard
Typical depth
2–3" in beds, 4"+ in a working swale
Coverage
1 cubic yard covers ~108 sq ft at 3" deep

What River Rock is

Naturally tumbled stone in mixed 1–3" sizes — smooth, round, and water-worn. Heavy enough to stay in drainage swales under flow, light enough to move by hand. Looks good wet or dry, the standard for visible drainage features and landscape borders.

Also called: river rock, landscape rock, creek stone, decorative stone.

What it’s used for

  • Landscape beds & borders
  • Dry creek beds & drainage swales
  • Around downspouts & catch basins
  • Decorative mulch alternative
Not a fit for Base or sub-base — rounded stones won't interlock or compact. They shift and roll under load, which is exactly what you don't want under pavers.

How much river rock do I need?

Work in cubic yards: length × width × depth in feet, divided by 27. River Rock runs about 1.35 tons per cubic yard, and our quad-axle trucks haul 35 tons a load. This table gives the coverage for a single cubic yard at common depths.

Depth1 cubic yard coversPer 100 sq ft
2" 162 sq ft 0.6 yd³ · 0.8 tons
3" 108 sq ft 0.9 yd³ · 1.3 tons
4" 81 sq ft 1.2 yd³ · 1.7 tons
6" 54 sq ft 1.9 yd³ · 2.5 tons
12" 27 sq ft 3.7 yd³ · 5.0 tons

Add 10–15% for compaction and waste before you order. The driveway gravel calculator will do the whole thing for you, including how many trucks it takes, and the full materials calculator can size an order from a total quantity instead of dimensions.

Common Questions

River Rock, answered.

Do I need landscape fabric under river rock?
Yes, in almost every case. Without fabric the stone works its way down into the soil and weeds come up through it, and within two seasons you are buying rock again. In a drainage swale use a permeable fabric so water still gets to the soil below.
What size river rock is best for a dry creek bed?
Mixed 1–3" is the right base for most residential runs — it reads as natural and stays put in moderate flow. If the channel carries real volume during storms, set larger stone or a few boulders along the outside of the bends where the water is trying to cut.
Can river rock go under a paver patio?
No. Rounded stone cannot interlock, so it rolls and shifts under load no matter how much you compact it. Use crusher run for the base and limestone screenings for the setting bed. River rock is a surface and decorative material only.
