What Crusher Run is

Angular crushed stone from ¾-inch pieces down to fines. The blend compacts into a dense base when placed over suitable ground in appropriate lifts. Drainage, preparation, and compaction determine how it performs.

Not a fit for French drains or drainage beds — the fines fill the voids and block water. Use #57 or #4 Clean Stone where drainage is the goal.

How much crusher run do I need?

Work in cubic yards: length × width × depth in feet, divided by 27. Crusher Run runs about 1.50 tons per cubic yard, and our quad-axle trucks haul 35 tons a load. This table gives the coverage for a single cubic yard at common depths.

What is crusher run gravel used for?

Base and sub-base work — driveways, parking lots, equipment pads, shed foundations, and low-traffic access roads. The fines are the reason it works: they fill the voids between the larger stone so the whole layer compacts into something close to solid rather than staying loose.

How thick should crusher run be for a driveway?

Four to six inches compacted over a firm subgrade for a residential driveway. Place it in 4" lifts and compact each one. On soft or clay-heavy subgrade, go deeper or put down a geotextile fabric first — otherwise the base pumps down into the soil over a couple of wet seasons.

Is crusher run the same as #57 limestone?

No, and the difference matters. Crusher run has fines and compacts solid. #57 is washed clean with no fines, so it drains but stays loose. Use crusher run for the base, #57 for drainage or as a top-dress surface. Putting #57 where you needed crusher run gives you a driveway that never firms up.
