How much fill dirt do I need?

Work in cubic yards: length × width × depth in feet, divided by 27. Fill Dirt runs about 1.35 tons per cubic yard, and our quad-axle trucks haul 35 tons a load. This table gives the coverage for a single cubic yard at common depths.

What is the difference between fill dirt and topsoil?

Fill dirt has the organic material taken out; topsoil is mostly organic. That single difference decides where each one goes. Fill dirt compacts and carries load. Topsoil grows things and settles. Most jobs use both — fill dirt for the volume, a topsoil cap for the last few inches.

How do I compact fill dirt correctly?

Place it in 6–8 inch lifts and compact each lift before adding the next. Dumping three feet at once and running over the top gives you a firm crust over loose material, and it will settle later. If a structure is going on top, the lift discipline matters more than the material.

Do you haul away dirt as well as deliver it?

Yes. We run dirt hauling both directions across Jefferson County — spoil off an excavation, fill onto a site. If you are digging and filling on the same job, call dispatch and we will coordinate the trucks so you are not paying for two separate trips.
