Why Your Gravel Driveway Keeps Getting Potholes

If the same potholes return after every load of gravel, check the driveway’s drainage, shape, and base before buying another load. Loose stone can fill the hole while leaving the reason it formed underneath.

Start with what happens after rain

Look at the driveway from a safe spot after a storm. Note where water pools, where it crosses the drive, and where it runs along the wheel tracks. Photograph those spots before they dry. A picture of the wet driveway can tell a grading contractor more than a description of the hole after you have filled it.

Water needs a route off the driving surface and a place to go afterward. A low shoulder, blocked ditch, or poorly placed discharge can keep sending it back onto the stone. FHWA’s guidance on recognizing drainage problems treats ponding, rutting, and drainage condition as connected observations. On a private driveway, those observations are useful starting points for the site review.

A crown is one way to shed water, but it is not the answer for every driveway. Crossfall, adjacent buildings, driveway entrances, and the available outlet all matter. Grading should not send water toward a neighbor or a structure to solve a puddle in the driving lane.

Match the symptom to the work

What you seeWhat to investigatePossible scope
A hole that holds waterLow surface, compacted rim, or blocked drainageReshape and compact the affected area; restore the outlet
Long wheel rutsSoft subgrade, insufficient base, or heavier trafficAssess the base before resurfacing
Stone washed downhillRunoff crossing or following the drivewayAddress the water route and then replace lost material
Mud working through the stoneWet soil mixing into the aggregateReview drainage, separation, and base reconstruction
Loose surface without deep rutsSurface material, depth, and traffic movementRegrade and assess the surface course

These are inspection prompts, not a diagnosis from a photograph. A short damaged section may need targeted work. A driveway that fails along its full length may need a broader reconstruction plan.

Does crusher run fix potholes?

Crusher run can be part of a repair because it contains angular stone and fines that compact together. It still needs a suitable foundation, a workable moisture condition, and deliberate compaction. Filling a waterlogged depression and driving over it is not the same as rebuilding a compacted base.

The crew may need to loosen the damaged surface, remove unsuitable material, correct the shape, and compact replacement aggregate in manageable layers. The equipment and layer thickness depend on the material and job. Deep repairs should not be treated as a single pile to flatten from the top.

Clean #57 stone serves a different purpose. Its open spaces let water move through the aggregate, but adding it does not create an outlet through wet clay or repair a weak base. See our driveway material comparison when choosing the base and surface courses.

When is another gravel delivery enough?

A top-up may be reasonable when the existing base is firm, the driveway drains, and the surface has simply thinned from use or maintenance. Confirm the material already present and the depth you intend to add. A thin refresh over a sound drive is a different order from building a new driveway from bare ground.

If there are persistent wet spots, deep ruts, or repeated washouts, request driveway grading and base assessment along with the stone. Keep the estimate clear about excavation, reshaping, material, spreading, and compaction. A delivery quote covers the truck and load; it should not be assumed to include all of those tasks.

Estimate the repair area, not automatically the whole drive

For a rectangular section, cubic yards equal length in feet × width in feet × depth in inches ÷ 324. As a planning example, a 30-foot by 12-foot section at an average 4-inch depth is about 4.44 cubic yards. That is geometric volume, before any adjustment for compaction, irregular holes, or material density.

Measure separate problem areas separately. For a complete resurfacing or base replacement, the driveway gravel calculator gives an estimate by layer. Use the proposed repair depth, not the depth of the single worst hole, across the entire driveway.

Send J1S the driveway dimensions, delivery address, photos after rain, and a note about the vehicles using it. Mention a camper, loaded trailer, or regular construction traffic; the work needs to suit the load it will actually carry.
