What #4 Clean Stone is

Washed 1½" crushed stone with no fines — just clean angular rock. The larger stone size and absence of fines means the highest drainage rate we carry. Used where #57 would migrate under pressure or where drainage volume demands more open void space.

Not a fit for Surface dressing or foot-traffic areas — 1½" angular stone is too large and rough for comfortable use, and too prominent for most landscape applications.

How much #4 clean stone do I need?

Work in cubic yards: length × width × depth in feet, divided by 27. #4 Clean Stone runs about 1.45 tons per cubic yard, and our quad-axle trucks haul 35 tons a load. This table gives the coverage for a single cubic yard at common depths.

Should I use #4 or #57 in a French drain?

Use #57 for a standard residential perimeter drain — it flows plenty and is easier to work around 4" pipe. Step up to #4 when the trench is deep, the volume is high, or the drain feeds a dry well. More void space means more water storage and faster movement.

Is #4 stone the same as railroad ballast?

They overlap in size but they are graded for different jobs. Ballast is specified to hold track alignment under load; #4 is specified as a washed drainage aggregate. For any drainage work, order #4 by name rather than asking for ballast.

Can #4 stone be used as a driveway base?

Not on its own. With no fines it never binds, so it stays loose and rough forever. It is sometimes used as a bottom layer over very soft ground with crusher run compacted on top, but the wearing course always needs a material that has fines.
