Rip rap is the material you bring in when water is winning. Six to eighteen inch angular stone, placed by machine, sized so the individual pieces are too heavy for the flow to move and too angular to roll once they key into each other.

What Rip Rap is

Large angular stone — typically 6 to 18 inches — placed by machine where erosion forces are too strong for smaller material. The mass and angular contact points resist hydraulic force. Often engineer-specified for creek banks and culvert outfalls.

Not a fit for Decorative use or any area with foot traffic — this is a working material for working conditions. Not for residential landscape beds.

How much rip rap do I need?

Work in cubic yards: length × width × depth in feet, divided by 27. Rip Rap runs about 1.50 tons per cubic yard, and our quad-axle trucks haul 35 tons a load. This table gives the coverage for a single cubic yard at common depths.

How thick does a rip rap blanket need to be?

Rule of thumb is at least 1.5 times the largest stone diameter — so 18–24 inches for typical 12" rock. Engineered projects will have a specified thickness and gradation; if a plan set calls out a class of rip rap, bring it to us and we will match the size.

Does rip rap need fabric underneath?

Almost always. Without a geotextile separator, water moving through the voids pulls fine soil out from under the stone and the whole blanket slumps. The fabric is cheap compared to redoing the bank, and it is standard on anything we place.

Can you place the rip rap, or is it delivery only?

Both. We deliver rip rap by the load, and we also do the placement work — bank stabilization, culvert inlet and outlet protection, and slope armoring are regular jobs for us across Jefferson County. Call dispatch and tell us which you need.
