What Bank Run Gravel is

Unprocessed pit-run material as it comes out of the bank — a natural mix of sand, small stones, and fines in varying proportions. The most economical sub-base and fill we carry. Performs well when precise drainage specification isn't required and you need volume at price.

Not a fit for Tight drainage specifications — the fines will slow water flow. Gradation varies batch to batch since it's unscreened.

How much bank run gravel do I need?

Work in cubic yards: length × width × depth in feet, divided by 27. Bank Run Gravel runs about 1.40 tons per cubic yard, and our quad-axle trucks haul 35 tons a load. This table gives the coverage for a single cubic yard at common depths.

How is bank run different from crusher run?

Crusher run is processed — the stone is crushed to a controlled ¾"-minus gradation, so every load behaves the same and compacts predictably. Bank run is whatever the pit yields that day. It costs less and it works fine as bulk sub-base, but you cannot count on consistent compaction.

Can I use bank run as my driveway base?

For a low-traffic farm or field drive, yes, and plenty of people do. For a residential driveway you will care about, put bank run down as the deep economy layer and cap it with 4" of compacted crusher run so you get a consistent, firm wearing surface.

Is bank run good for trench backfill?

It is one of the most common uses. It fills fast, it costs less than processed stone, and above the pipe zone the exact gradation rarely matters. Compact it in lifts like anything else, especially under a driveway or anywhere the trench crosses a traffic area.
