Herculaneum has a strong industrial heritage along the Mississippi River that left older utility infrastructure and variable ground conditions across the area. Residential neighborhoods on the bluff side encounter rock relatively quickly; river-bottom areas carry soft alluvial fill that behaves very differently. Sewer and water infrastructure in the older neighborhoods is consistently at or past end-of-life, and ground near the waterfront can present unexpected subsurface conditions for any excavation work.
